St Mary & St John Church of England V.A. Primary School

North Luffenham, Rutland

PSHE and RSE

At St Mary & St John CEVA Primary School, our motto is to 'let your light shine' and our school’s vision keeps the children at the heart of everything we do as we nurture them 'to grow, to flourish and to shine'. We work together with them to provide an education that will prepare them as lifelong learners, ready to deal with and overcome the challenges they may come up against as they journey through life.

Jigsaw, the mindful approach to Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education incorporating Relationships and Sex Education, brings together PSHE, emotional literacy, social and life skills, understanding of self and others and spiritual development in a comprehensive scheme of learning. Jigsaw is designed as a whole school approach, with all year groups working on the same theme (Puzzle) at the same time: Being Me in My World, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships and Changing me.

"PSHE is important because it teaches the skills necessary to navigate

the wider world and stay safe.” Kim Constable

At St Mary & St John CEVA Primary School, we also use Picture News as a weekly resource along with our Jigsaw PSHE lessons and our Collective Worship themes.  From Reception to Year 6, children love the Picture News resource to learn about current events around the world. Our Picture News resources link directly to various British Values each week and make reference to the protected characteristics and human rights of children. This fantastic resource provides opportunity for discussion, debate and worship linked to current issues and events in a child-friendly, appropriate way, allowing children to think about themselves and others. Through this, children are learning to express their thoughts and feelings, unlocking key vocabulary about their emotions.
